Thank you for visiting the High School pages!
In line with the vision and mission of ISS, the High School teaching team endeavors to provide unique learning experiences that extend and engage students. We have a philosophy of inclusive education and our combined efforts are dedicated to individual student success. The care and support provided ensures that students are as prepared as they possibly can be for what will come after leaving ISS, whether it be moving on to another school or tertiary experience. At ISS teachers are committed to ongoing school improvement in all aspects. there is the passion to do better and certainly elicit the best possible outcomes for our students so they can become the unique young adult they are meant to be, with a clear sense of social responsibility.
Education in the High School offers an opportunity for students to obtain an internationally recognized qualification. Each program offered carries a reputation for excellence in education and offers a holistic approach to education. Three programs are offered in the High school, all are internationally recognized . The first is the Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) offered in Year 9 and 10. In Years 11 and 12, students have the option of choosing either the Canberra Board of Senior Secondary Studies Australian Capital Territories (ACT) Senior Secondary Certificate and ATAR (Australian Tertiary Entrance Statement) or the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP). Programs run at the International School Suva are accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). International recognition of the excellence of each of the courses and wide ranging variety of subjects on offer mean that students have been accepted in universities around the world and have found themselves well prepared for whatever challenge they have chosen to take on.
Similarly, teachers at ISS pride themselves on providing quality education that is not simply focused on academic scores, but one which assists students to develop the attributes typical of those in our school wide learner outcomes. We provide a strong program which includes Creativity Action and Service and the International Duke of Edinburgh Award, camps and extracurricular sports and activities and more. Teachers are working toward seeing our students become inquirers, thinkers, communicators, courageous, knowledgeable, principled, balanced, caring, open-minded, reflective and visionary. These are schoolwide learner outcomes and these are something which is key to the kind of students that the High School team would like to see matriculate from ISS. Our community of students and families from over 40 different countries means we can celebrate and experience different cultures and diversity. For this reason, our students are so much more than simply an account of their academic performance in examinations. The fact that many students return to the school once they have left to specifically thank their teachers is testament to their preparedness for life after school. One of our former scholarship students now attending university wrote the following to me:
‘The main reason I switched out of Genetics was the fact that the Biology and Pharmacology courses have small class sizes and focus heavily on problem-based learning – aspects that I learned to love through my experience doing the IB Diploma at ISS. The Group 4 project and the general style of testing that the IB curriculum uses really prepare students for the kind of learning that is expected in university. Those two years at ISS really have changed my life, and continue to have a positive impact on me. I’m so thankful for having the opportunity to join ISS when I did – I don’t think I could have made a better decision. ISS has prepared me to get involved in student government, manage and train student clubs, and even given me the skills to be selected into 2 competitive academic programs. I couldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for those two amazing years. I’m forever grateful for my experience with an amazing and dedicated team of teachers and a diverse and welcoming student community.’
The High School team aims to work in tandem with parents and students to achieve the best for our students and establish them as future effective members of the global community they will become part of.
