Creatures of the Night
As part of our ‘Seeing the Light, Watching the Dark’ POI unit we made a whole class mural. We had to brainstorm lots of different animals and mythic creatures that come out at night and then we had to draw them onto a big piece of paper. We painted our creatures and then we hung our mural in our classroom.
Where do I come from?
This semester in Visual Arts as part of our ‘Where Do I Come From’ POI unit we have looked at the flags of the countries our class comes from. Then we made papier mache masks out of balloons. When our masks were dry we painted them with the flag of the country we identify with.
This semester in Visual Arts, as part of our 'Conservation' POI unit we worked on creating an 'Everything Tree' for our classroom. We also learnt how to mix lots of different colors on a palette and then painted rainforest animals in teams.
This semester in Visual Arts as part of our ‘Conservation’ POI unit we did some observational drawing of different plants. We had to look at them very close up then draw the outlines very slowly and carefully. At the end we colored in some of the background using chalk.
This semester in Visual Arts for our ‘Amazing Animals’ POI unit we made animal masks. Some of them were papier mache and some were made from plaster. We learnt how to mix lots of different colors on a palette and then we carefully painted our chosen animal. At the end they were coated in a varnish so they became shiny.
This semester in Visual Arts as part of our ‘Making and Keeping Friends’ POI unit we looked at the artist Keith Haring. We looked at how he made cartoon images of people and then we made our own design of ourselves. Some of us are dancing, jumping or standing and some of us are angels and televisions! We drew around our designs onto a big banner and then we painted it using complementary colors which are opposite each other on the color wheel. When it was finished we hung it in our classroom.
This semester in Visual Arts as part of our ‘Through the Looking Glass’ and ‘Living Together’ POI units we have studied the artwork of Aboriginal Australia. We were shown types of dot painting and different symbols. We had to make a drawing of our trip to the mangroves. We drew the landscape from a bird’s eye perspective and we had to draw a path of our journey. Next we painted the background and the trees. Then we used our brushes upside down to make the dots.
This semester in Visual Arts as part of the ‘Through the Looking Glass’ POI unit we studied the sculptor Alexander Calder. We learnt how he made ‘stabiles’ and ‘mobiles’. In art class we designed our own stabiles and drew them onto pieces of cardboard. After our cardboard was cut out we had to paint them and stick them together so the stabile would stand upright.
Excursion Pacific Arts Centre
This year in Visual Arts as part of our ‘Through the Looking Glass’ POI unit we went on an excursion to the Pacific Arts Centre “Oceania” at USP. We talked to the artists working there and they showed us how they collaborate together to make large scale paintings and also dances and music. They showed us some dances they had performed as well as musical instruments they had invented. It was mind blowing and we asked lots of questions!!
This semester in Visual Arts as part of our 'Through the Looking Glass' POI unit we have looked at the artwork of Pablo Picasso and Cubism. We also looked at monochromatic color schemes and practised painting them. We had to do a self portrait but we broke up the image to make it more abstract like the cubists. Then we used pastels to fill the sections of our portrait using monochromatic colors.
This semester in Visual Arts as part of our 'Inventors and Discoverers' POI unit we looked at the artist Lenonardo Da Vinci. We learnt how he used perspective and also how he made sketches of human anatomy and his inventions. We stained our paper and made observational drawings of a skeleton and tools using charcoal, chalk, graphite and pencils.
This semester in Visual Arts as part of the 'Our Growing Body' POI unit we looked at printmaking and woodcuts. We studied how to draw bodies and faces using correct proportions. We made several designs but only chose one to transfer to our woodblock. We had to cut it out very carefully using special woodcarving tools. When our woodblocks were complete we printed them onto paper using rollers and printing ink.
This semester in Visual Arts as part of the 'Growing into Myself' POI unit we looked at the customs and designs of Polynesian tattooing. We had to compare designs among different countries in the Pacific, create our own original design, transfer it onto tapa cloth and then paint it.
This semester in Visual Arts as part of the "I Believe" POI unit we have studied the use of radial balance in different cultures artwork. We looked at the use of prayer flags and mandalas in Asia. We had to make our own design using radial balance and incorporating symbols that represented our own personal beliefs, rituals or celebrations. We turned our design into a stencil so that we could screen print it onto colored cloth squares. Then we strung everybody's squares together and hung them from the Tavola deck at school.
