Afternoon Activities

Students will be picking their activities this Friday, the 22nd July.

Activities will then commence on Tuesday 26th July.

Please note that Tuesday Afternoon Activities run from 2:30 until 3:50pm.

The busses run as normal at 4pm on a Tuesday.

Activities are compulsory for years 6-10 and optional for years 11 and 12.

Some of the activities incur a charge and these are listed beside the said activity.

Performing Arts - Visual Art

 

Year 9: The Creative Process

The first semester is spent examining drawing and painting, extending observational skills. Students work from images taken by themselves to develop a clear understanding of composition, tonal values and mark-making. All practical tasks will be accompanied by supporting studies in the form of two A2 posters back-to-back. Students are also required to continuously reflect upon their individual progress. Drawing skills are fundamental to this course, so before we begin to understand the creative process we need to establish a strong foundation of observational skills and an awareness of the basic elements of visual art. The Creative Process will then inform students about the steps needed to generate an idea, gather research, investigate and experiment, develop and realize the idea modify the work and evaluate the results.

The second semester will continue with developing an understanding of the Creative Process through Design and interpretative assignments.

 

Year 10

Observation, Interpretation and Design

An integral element of Visual Arts is developing the ability to seek out both primary and secondary sources. Our aim this year is to exhaust a variety of sources in order to develop thorough bookwork research. This research will then be developed using the “Creative Process” and the steps needed to generate an idea, investigate and experiment, develop and realise the idea, modify work and evaluate the results. Whilst the initial media experimentations will be teacher, initiative, independence and focus will be essential as this unit prepares students for their IGCSE examinations.

 

 

Year 11

Semester 1: Culture and Identity

This unit requires students to explore a culture of their choice in the media of their choice. The cultures of many countries have been explored for example, Greece, China, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Cook Islands, India and Australia. This unit is entirely student directed. This means that all themes, research, design decisions and finished artwork are generated entirely by the student with the teacher as facilitator rather than director. This rigorous academic year is designed to assess the growth of the student as an independent artist, able to explore, analyse, synthesise and unify a mature body of work.

 

 

Semester 2: Drawing

The aim for this unit will be to develop our understanding of the characteristics of various wet and dry drawing materials. Both the contextual element and final outcome for studio 1 work will be based on self portraiture. For studio work 2 the theme will be “Finding your Own Theme”. This can either be an extension on portraiture or a theme chosen by the student. Whilst the initial media experiments will be teacher lead, students will be expected to initiate all studio work.

 

 

Year 12

Semester 1: Painting

This unit looks at developing an individualist theme, to be utilised as a vehicle for creative expression and mixed media explorations. Our theme for this unit will be "Story telling". We will use the work of Portuguese painter, Paula Rego as our starting point. Story telling is an intrinsic part of her work and we will examine the stories that she has told and then go on to explore artists that have an individual significance for each student.  This research will be the foundation for an assignment that will both inform and enrich the students’ individual artwork.  Through exploration and experimentation, students will produce studio works that are reflective of their own personal life story.

 

 

Semester 2: Self-Initiated Study

The theme for the remaining studio work is to be initiated by the individual student. The work may be a continuation from the Culture Unit in semester 1 or may be the development of an entirely new theme. All studio work should be supported by media experiments and planning in the Visual Arts Process Diary. This is an independent unit with the teacher acting purely as a facilitator.

 

Science - Years 9 - 10

 

Coordinated Science

 

Students in Years 9 and 10 take Coordinated Science. This two-year IGCSE course has students sit external examinations in year 10. The Coordinated Science course is a double award, requiring study in the three disciplines; Chemistry, Physics and Biology. Students have specialist teachers for each subject area who are committed to providing detailed content in a variety of learning styles in an environment in which students excel.

The course involves a mixture of practical work, research and theory. The practical work spans all sections of the course and is regarded as essential in assisting the students to understand the many concepts involved. Application through research and practical investigation is an important tool in enabling students to gain understanding and appreciation of the “Scientific Method” in general.  The Coordinated Science program prepares students to progress through either the ACT or IB Diploma programs in science in Years 11 and 12.

 

  

 

 

Science - Years 11-12

 

Biology, Physics,Chemistry, Environmental Systems
 
At Year 11 and 12, Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Environmental Systems are offered as separate subjects and students may choose to take one or two sciences.  All courses are suitable for ACT matriculation or sitting examinations contributing to the IB Diploma Programme. IB Diploma courses are offered at Standard Level (SL) or Higher Level(HL), with the exception of Environmental Systems and Societies which is only offered as an SL subject.
 
ACT Biology T or IB Diploma Biology
In Biology, students develop their knowledge in human physiology, defense against disease, cells and cell structure, genetics and genetic engineering and biotechnology and ecology and evolution. There is also a component of plant science. As with the other science courses students can expect academically rigorous coursework, a practical approach emphasis and intentional development of skills in designing and conducting innovative experiments.
 
ACT Chemistry T or IB Diploma Chemistry
The Chemistry course involves the study of materials and enables students to understand the rules governing the behavior of particles and also gives them practical, numerical, written and analytical skills. Students investigate the atom, examining stoichiometry and energetics, kinetics, acids and bases, redox, organic chemistry, biochemistry and modern analytical chemistry. Students have the additional option of studying selected topics in the area of medicines and drugs.
 
ACT Physics T or IB Diploma Physics
The Physics course covers physical measurement, mechanics, thermal physics, oscillations and waves, electric currents, fields and forces, atomic and nuclear physics and energy, power and climate change. Students may also cover motion in fields, thermodynamics, wave phenomena, electromagnetic induction, quantum and nuclear physics and digital technology. Students also study two options, from a range of areas including astrophysics, communications, relativity, medical physics and particle physics.
 
ACT Environmental Systems T or IB Diploma Environmental Systems and Societies
Our newest course, Environmental Systems and Societies involves “the study of fundamental structure and functioning of natural systems and the broad impacts of human activities. It is a study that is essentially scientific and enables students to adopt an informed and responsible stance on the wider range of pressing environmental issues that they will inevitably come to face.” Students gain practical fieldwork experience through investigation and develop communication and critical thinking skills through debate and discourse.  This is offered as a one-year programme of study in year 11.
 
 
 
 

Science - Year 6 - 8

 

Year 6-8
Middle school science at ISS uses the process of inquiry to develop scientific literacy and skills.  Students are encouraged to have a very “hands-on” practical approach and enjoy investigating issues in science. This helps students to understand that science is not an isolated subject but that it relates to numerous other areas in the curriculum as well as to a student’s life and world outside of school.
 
In the initial years, the focus is on developing scientific skills; whilst the latter years focus on reinforcing the processes, skills and attitudes of earlier years as well as incorporating the knowledge and background necessary to prepare students for the science subjects in years 9-12. By the end of Middle School, students are expected to be able to identify local and global issues in science and discuss them in a knowledgeable and considered manner.
Assessment tasks consist of a range of activities which may be projects, posters, essays, brochures, or models; however, there is a heavy emphasis on students learning to design, undertake and analyze experimental work.

Students are given the option to participate in the ICAS science competition each year. Pupils from both the primary and secondary school sit a quiz appropriate to their age group and compete against pupils from all over Australia and the South Pacific. They gain certificates and medals depending on their performance. Students from ISS have achieved some excellent results over the last few years including a number of gold medals.
 
The Science Fair is a yearly event and is compulsory for our Middle School students. It has a different theme each year and students can work individually or in groups to solve science problems of their choice related to the theme. It is a chance for students to really be innovative and to extend the science skills they have learnt in class. Prizes are awarded and all investigation reports are displayed in the school for a week for public viewing.
