IB Diploma

 

THE INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE DIPLOMA PROGRAMME

The IB Diploma is an exciting, rigorous programme of study offered in the final two years of school at ISS. The benefits of completing the Diploma are multiple, but primarily students are extremely well prepared for future tertiary study, become productive and active members within their own community, are globally-minded critical thinkers with a lifelong interest in learning.

It is designed to provide students of different linguistic, cultural and educational backgrounds with the intellectual, social and critical perspectives necessary for the adult world that lies ahead

  • Enable students to move between countries without affecting their education
  • Encourage international awareness and understanding through a common academic experience

The focus of the program is the education of the whole person, encouraging and facilitating the development of individuals who are able to act responsibly in all aspects of life within an increasingly complex global society. To that end, its educational philosophy is based on the combination of the principles of: inquiry-based learning, academic rigor and critical thinking.

Students are encouraged to develop skills grouped in five basic areas, namely, thinking skills, communication skills, social skills, self-management skills and research skills. They are encouraged to be proactive and self-regulated in their learning.

 

The Curriculum

The IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) curriculum is focused on six academic areas surrounding a core of Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay and CAS. Students are required to study six different subjects and three subjects are studied at higher level (HL) and three at standard level (SL). The subjects offered are given below. A course of study for the IB Diploma includes selection of one subject from groups 1-5 and either a subject from group 6 or a second subject, subject to timetabling constraints, from Group 3 or 4.

Students usually take one subject from Group 1-5 and a sixth subject from Group 6 or a  second subject from Group 3 or 4. ISS offers the following subjects for each group:

Group 1 Studies in Language and Literature: Language A English: Literature, Language A English: Language and Literature, Self-taught Language A.
Group 2 Language Acquisition: French B, French Ab Initio, Chinese B.
Group 3 Individuals and Societies: History, Business and Management, Economics, Psychology, Environmental Systems and Societies.
Group 4 Experimental Sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Systems and Societies.
Group 5 Mathematics: Mathematics HL, Mathematics SL and Mathematical Studies.
Group 6 The Arts: Visual Arts, Music, Theatre



Some subjects may not be available in a given year if the demand is insufficient. Normally three subjects will be taken at higher level and three subjects at standard level.

In addition to this, the core of the IB Diploma is based on three key components: the Theory of Knowledge, Creativity Action and Service (CAS) and the Extended Essay. These challenging components are integral to ensuring that the students receive an education that is truly unique.

Theory of Knowledge is an interdisciplinary course, which encourages students to critically reflect on knowledge gained inside and outside the classroom. Students must submit one essay and give an oral presentation.


Creativity Action and Service (CAS) provides a balance to the academic demands of the Diploma by requiring students to be involved in activities outside the classroom. Students are required to complete 8 learning outcomes over the two years requiring several hours a week to be spent on activities of this nature.

 


Extended Essay requires student to do original research and write a 4000 word essay. The topic is chosen by the student, usually in an area they feel passionate about.
